Dear UKESF Scholars,

Firstly, congratulations to those of you who were successful in getting a new scholarship this year! ECS students continued to do really well in the scheme, with over twice as many scholarships awarded as any other university (we got 14, next was Imperial with 6).

As you’re probably all aware, one of the ‘conditions’ of your UKESF scholarship is that you undertake some outreach every year. If you haven’t yet done anything yet this year, and hence still need to do something:

  1. I’m after some volunteers to help with Electronics Everywhere (a collaboration between UKESF and ECS), see https://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/outreach/kits. In particular, we’ve had some positive feedback from teachers about the videos we have on the website, and would like to get some more short ‘More About Electronics’ videos created, particularly around things like Planck’s constant and capacitors (though would also be useful to have some on topics like LEDs and optoelectronics, integrated circuits, PCBs, analogue/audio signals, etc). The short videos are targeted at A-Level students, and so we’ve found that they are best created and delivered by undergraduate students. If you’re interested in helping with this, please get in touch with me at gvm at ecs.soton.ac.uk<mailto:gvm at ecs.soton.ac.uk>, and I can tell you more. In particular, I’m looking for people to:

     * design the videos (i.e. come up with the approximate script and any supporting images etc. We can give some guidance over the kinds of things that would be useful to include in the ‘story’),
     * present the videos (i.e. be the actors. These could be recorded in the Zepler labs, or at your home, or somewhere else! You’d be left to record them on your own, so you’re welcome to keep retrying until you’re completely happy with it!)
     * edit the videos together (To the same look and style as you can see on the existing ones. There’s freely available software you can use to do this).

It could be that different people do one of these roles for multiple videos, or that different people each do all of these roles for a single video – we’ve done both approaches in the past!.

  1. Alternatively, if you’re not interested in that, but still want/need to do some outreach, get in touch with the ECS Outreach Manager, Dr Reena Pau (cc’d, R.Pau at soton.ac.uk<mailto:R.Pau at soton.ac.uk>), and she can tell you about other opportunities/suggestions.

Thanks, and good luck with your exams!
