Dear UKESF Scholar,
You should have just received this email from me regarding the opportunity to be a Mentor at the ECS Summer Taster Courses this August. However, I wanted to also drop you all a separate email to encourage you to take part – as you know, one of the commitments of your scholarship is to take part in some form of outreach event during the year – and being a Mentor would count for this. Most UKESF companies seem to be supportive of releasing their scholars to take part, if you have that conversation with them.
If you don’t want to/can’t do this, but would like to find out about other ECS outreach activities you could get involved with during the year, please drop my colleague Dr Reena Pau (cc’d) an email, and she can tell you more.
Any questions, get in touch.
Geoff

Subject: Be a Mentor at the ECS (Virtual) Summer Taster Courses 2021
Dear ECS student,
ECS has a long history of running its own Summer ‘Taster Courses’ (e.g. http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/news/4506, http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/news/4752), and will be running them virtually this summer from 02-06 August 2021. Around 140x 16-18 year old school/college students will be attending to find out more about Electronics, Computer Science, and Biomedical Electronic Engineering. There will be a mix of lectures/discussions and hands-on activities that they undertake. You can find out more at www.taster.ecs.soton.ac.uk<http://www.taster.ecs.soton.ac.uk/>
A team of our current undergraduate students will be Mentors at the Taster Course, helping them during the practical exercises, etc. They have always been fantastic and massively contributed to the success of the event (and I think enjoyed themselves too). We are now recruiting the student Mentor team for the 2021 Taster Courses. If you’re interested in being a Mentor, please complete this form (https://forms.office.com/r/45D2JvftVv<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fforms.office.com%2Fr%2F45D2JvftVv&data=04%7C01%7Cukesf-scholars%40ecs.soton.ac.uk%7Ceceb311707d74a52556008d8e8885edb%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C0%7C0%7C637515019682895903%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=hj%2FVC5xjOlpjqOafzmaitQtBJnsparQDsyCtEP%2BOFkI%3D&reserved=0>) by 31 March 2021.
Mentors are paid to acknowledge and thank them for their efforts. However we are primarily interested in those students who are keen to volunteer and are enthusiastic to encourage the next generation of engineers and scientists, and would have still volunteered even if we weren’t paying them!
Best regards,
Professor Geoff Merrett, Dr Reena Pau, Dr Jon Hare, Dr Alex Weddell, Dr Dan Spencer
