[Ukesf-scholars] Be a Mentor at the ECS Summer Taster Courses 2020

Dear UKESF Scholar,

You should have received this email from me already regarding the opportunity to be a Mentor at the ECS Summer Taster Courses this July. However,  I wanted to also drop you all a separate email to encourage you to take part – as you know, one of the commitments of your scholarship is to take part in some form of outreach event during the year – and being a Mentor would count for this. Most UKESF companies seem to be supportive of releasing their scholars to take part, if you have that conversation with them.

If you don’t want to/can’t do this, but would like to find out about other ECS outreach activities you could get involved with during the year, please drop my colleague Dr Reena Pau (cc’d) an email, and she can tell you more.

For those of you that are interested in being a Mentor at the ECS Summer Taster Course, but were unable to attend the information session this afternoon, you can find a recording of it at the link below. Note the battery in the microphone appears to have died a couple of minutes into the recording – but if you crank your speakers up a lot, you should still be able to hear the audio from the lectern microphone!

Subject: Be a Mentor at the ECS Summer Taster Courses 2020

Dear ECS student,

ECS has been running our own Summer ‘Taster Courses’ for the last six years (e.g. http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/news/4506, http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/news/4752), and will be running them again this year from 27-31 July. They are week-long residential courses (one on Electronics and Computer Science, and the other on Biomedical Electronic Engineering), where around 140x 16-18 year old school/college students come to ECS, stay in halls of residence, and attend some lectures, labs, seminars, competitions and social events. A team of ~16 of our current undergraduate students will be Mentors at the Taster Course, living in halls with the attendees, helping them in labs, on socials etc. They have always been fantastic and massively contributed to the success of the event (and I think enjoyed themselves too). Mentors are provided with accommodation and all meals for the week, and are also paid to acknowledge and thank them for their efforts. However we are primarily interested in those students who are keen to volunteer and are enthusiastic to encourage the next generation of engineers and scientists, and would have still volunteered even if we weren’t paying them!

We are now recruiting the student Mentor team for the 2020 Taster Courses. If you’re interested in being a Mentor, please come along to an information (and Q&A) session in 07/3009 at 14:00 on Wednesday 19th February. We’ll give further details there about how to apply to be a Mentor, for those that are interested, and we will also record the session for those that cannot attend.
