Dear UK-ESF scholar,

Firstly, congratulations to all of you who joined the UKESF scholarship scheme this year – well done. I haven’t seen the final statistics yet, but it looks like another great year for ECS.

For those of you that are continuing for a second (or more) year, I hope you had a good summer placement last year. You probably remember that I bugged you at the start of term to apply for the Scholar of the Year award, and our congratulations go to Rikki Tura who won first prize (https://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/news/6420) – the 9th finalist (and 5th winner) for ECS in the 8 years that its been running!

As you probably know, one of the conditions of your scholarship is that you do something each year related to promoting electronics to young people. You’re welcome to organise something off your own back or, if you’d like some help/suggestions, there are a number of things that we do within ECS that you could help with:

1) Our Taster Course – see below if you haven’t already (and you do get paid)!
2) Inreach activities with schools (i.e. we need people to help out when we run lab activities in Zepler with schools)
3) Outreach activities with schools (i.e. people to go out to schools to give a talk or run lab activities)
4) Other events (e.g. helping to run “IoT on the Beach” https://www.hants.gov.uk/shop/product.php?productid=52529&cat=424&page=1<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hants.gov.uk%2Fshop%2Fproduct.php%3Fproductid%3D52529%26cat%3D424%26page%3D1&data=01%7C01%7C%7C1728b1e56b614a2c591b08d69b47de3d%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C1&sdata=MZozle5QitJ3LTEbuZNMbKHOEpj8d9AF9Wr0SYliozE%3D&reserved=0>)
5) Helping to design/create inreach/outreach lab activities to run with school students
6) Helping out with UCAS visit days/open days etc
7) Doing design, assembly, test, marketing (e.g. videos) to do with the electronics kits project we have (www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/kits<http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/kits>)

If you’re interested in (1), see email below.
If you’re interested in (2)-(5), please get in touch with Reena Pau (R.Pau at soton.ac.uk<mailto:R.Pau at soton.ac.uk>), the ECS Outreach Coordinator
If you’re interested in (6), please get in touch with the EEE senior admissions tutor, Dr James Pilgrim (jp2 at ecs.soton.ac.uk<mailto:jp2 at ecs.soton.ac.uk>)
If you’re interested in (7), please get in touch with me

Subject: Be a [PAID] Mentor at the ECS Taster Course/Summer School 2019

Dear ECS student,

ECS has been running our own Summer ‘Taster Courses’ for the last five years (e.g. http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/news/4506, http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/news/4752), and will be running them again this year from 29 July-02 August 2019. They are week-long residential courses (one on Electronics and Computer Science, and the other on Biomedical Electronic Engineering), where around 140x 16-18 year old school/college students come to ECS, stay in halls of residence, and attend some lectures, labs, seminars, competitions and social events. You can find out more at www.taster.ecs.soton.ac.uk<http://www.taster.ecs.soton.ac.uk>

A team of 16 of our current students will be Mentors at the Taster Course, living in halls with the attendees, helping them in labs, on socials etc. They have always been fantastic and massively contributed to the success of the event (and I think enjoyed themselves too). Mentors are paid £500, and are provided with accommodation and all meals for the week.

We are now recruiting the student Mentor team for the 2019 Taster Courses. If you’re interested in being a Mentor, please complete the form at http://bit.ly/2VavMez<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F2VavMez&data=01%7C01%7C%7C1728b1e56b614a2c591b08d69b47de3d%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C1&sdata=Tvundm1kOe9fb%2Bn4cuWqLLfSKADnunAS5X6t9Rs2MHc%3D&reserved=0> by 23:59 on Sunday 10th March. We will let you know if you have been successful by Monday 18 March.

Best regards,

Dr Geoff Merrett, Dr Reena Pau, Dr Jon Hare, Dr Alex Weddell, Dr Dan Spencer
