In August 2021, a Kaggle-style challenge on AI in autonomous cyber operations (ACO) was announced at the 1st International Workshop on Adaptive Cyber Defence<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsites.google.com%2Fgo.spawar.navy.mil%2Fijcai-acd-workshop&data=04%7C01%7Csdd1%40soton.ac.uk%7Cc9a8709a23cf4a47bc4d08d98efb4276%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C0%7C0%7C637698032783609773%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=1EwrfBUXUFO819JQCzw673v1jstm7hDiqn8S1uWC5e8%3D&reserved=0>. The challenge is titled the Cyber Autonomy Gym for Experimentation<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Furl%3Fq%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fgithub.com%252Fcage-challenge%252Fcage-challenge-1%26sa%3DD%26sntz%3D1%26usg%3DAFQjCNE8tWzrK8-IAmr4WuATjp6jzETtSA&data=04%7C01%7Csdd1%40soton.ac.uk%7Cc9a8709a23cf4a47bc4d08d98efb4276%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C0%7C0%7C637698032783619758%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=6Ph0E9PExjGB2waorRxqIhR4zMd6mVlXhk5qRxgXCT4%3D&reserved=0> (CAGE) and its organisers intend to engage the global AI and cyber security research communities to support the development of demonstrations, procedures, tactics, and techniques of ACO. The focus of this first challenge is on the development of defensive cyber agents & higher-level strategies required to effectively respond to attacks on an enterprise network. The challenge is scheduled to close on 1st February 2022.

In order to encourage UK participants in the challenge, the NCSC has agreed to fund any costs that teams may incur (e.g., travel and compute) up to a pre-agreed limit. To apply for this funding, the following conditions must be met:

  * Teams must comprise of early career researchers or PhD students
  * Teams must send CVs, previous related work, and a possible challenge approach to dsprogramme at turing.ac.uk<mailto:dsprogramme at turing.ac.uk>

Funding applications will close on the 1st November 2021. Representatives of the D&S Programme at the Turing will notify the top three entrants shortly after this deadline. After the challenge closes, funded teams will be expected to share a description of their methodology with the Turing D&S programme. This may lead to longer-term funding opportunities in the future.
