Aspects of model selection and goodness-of-fit test for ecological models

Model selection and goodness-of-fit assessment are often overlooked steps in ecological model fitting, however their thorough consideration is essential if estimates from the models are to be used to reliably inform future conservation strategies.  Within this talk I will focus on models for ecological capture-recapture data. I will demonstrate how traditional diagnostic tests for departures from model assumptions are equivalent to score tests and will present new diagnostic tests to detect heterogeneity in capture and transition probabilities.  Finally, I will present our new test for the underlying state-structure of Hidden Markov models for the case of partially observed capture-recapture data and will explain how this is motivating my future research in this area.
