Supporting decisions in agri-environmental systems
Kirsty Hassall (Rothamsted Research)
Abstract: Statistical modelling is of utmost importance to be able to translate data into usable information by accounting and communicating different sources of variability. In this talk, I will focus on applications within the agri-environmental system highlighting some of the varied shapes data can come in and how the analysis of such motivates new topics of research. I will also emphasise the role of an applied statistician, not only in the statistical analysis and modelling but in the communication of such to ensure this information can be used to support downstream decisions.

Subject: S3RI seminar: Herwig Friedl (Graz University of Technology), Thursday 22 April
Dear all,
Hope everyone is having a good start of the week!
This Thursday 22 April at 2 pm, we have Prof Herwig Friedl (Graz University of Technology) giving a talk on
"Mixture Models in Practice."
Please see below for the details of the talk and how to join the seminar online.
Have a nice week, and hope to see you at the seminar on Thursday!
Kind regards,
Jessie
Mixture Models in Practice
Herwig Friedl (Graz University of Technology)
On the basis of two rather convincing applications of Mixture Models we will introduce into this model class. In a first study we deal with black and white C-SAM images of wafer structures. The statistical analysis is based on the corresponding multi-modal histograms of the greyscales. The objective is to draw conclusions on both, the quality of the wafers as also on the contrast of the images. A heterogeneous mixture of gamma densities together with a uniform component has been applied to enable such a two-fold failure analysis.
Another application deals with a homogeneous mixture of Generalized Non-Linear Models to estimate the daily maximum gas consumption depending on the outside temperature. For this purpose, we implemented “flexmixNL” as an extension of the well-known R package “flexmix”. This now allows for the analysis of such a mixture of linear exponential families in which the means are non-linearly modeled, here by a family of sigmoid functions.
