Fisher’s Eugenics and Fisher’s Statistics
John Aldrich (Economic, Social and Political Sciences, University of Southampton)
In 1911 a Cambridge mathematics undergraduate Ronald Fisher (1890-1962) revealed himself as a eugenist with an interest in the underlying sciences of genetics and statistics. Fisher had brilliant careers in those sciences but he was a life-long supporter of eugenics and for a decade occupied a chair of eugenics. This paper considers how this engagement with eugenics influenced his statistical work. My conclusion is that it was less than might be expected.
