***apologies if you receive this more than once***

Circulated on behalf of Dr Wassim Dbouk<https://www.southampton.ac.uk/smmi/about/staff/wd1v20.page>

The Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) is interested in hosting a three-month placement for a PhD candidate with a data science/AI background to perform a grey and academic literature review of the technological advancements that are adopted or being developed in other coastguard agencies and/or ship registries around the world. The objective is to stay ahead of the curve and provide the MCA with the necessary insight and evidence base to support its offer to its customers and to boost its attractiveness amidst risks relating to inter alia detention, maritime safety, route efficiency, etc. This would be achieved through the adoption of state-of-the-art techniques such as predictive analyses of various data.

The literature review would be both grey and academic, covering a presentation of what other coastguards/ship registries have been doing or are planning to do with their customers, and the academic writings around the technologies that are resorted to. This would produce a more comprehensive understanding necessary for planning the next steps for the MCA.

Interviews: March 2021
Start date: April/May 2021
Duration: three months
Remuneration: £2,000/month
Application deadline: 22 February 2021

The MCA is happy to fully fund this placement, but any PhD candidates putting their names forward must seek to suspend their studies for the period of the placement (taking account of all the necessary approvals).
