***apologies if you receive this more than once***

Please see the email below. I am not aware of anyone in Southampton planning to lead on a bid for this Call. If you would like to be involved in the Turing-led bid, please email them ASAP, as the deadline for them to enter an "intention so submit" is Thursday 27 February. Details are below.

The Turing Institute is planning to submit an application to the call<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ukri.org%2Ffunding%2Ffunding-opportunities%2Fresearch-centre-of-excellence-in-protecting-citizens-online%2F&data=01%7C01%7C%7C7a3488f9d33642bb44ad08d7b21a174d%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C0&sdata=2ZvQFSrxnWG7%2BbGQcOMNiPPAD86hTp8L2xX05UbgiWM%3D&reserved=0> for the UKRI funded Protecting Citizens Online Centre of Excellence. This CoE will have an investment of £6.89m over a three-year period with the initial focus to " explore holistic approaches to the development of privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs), and the implications of their use in addressing the issue of protecting citizens online." The CofE is tasked to "build and lead the UK's world-leading interdisciplinary community on this mission and provide a clear single engagement point with enough critical mass to engage with government, industry and citizens".

The Turing believes that a Turing-led hub would benefit its university partners and the wider UK research community. The Institute is well-placed to connect researchers across its network and build a community working against the proliferation of online harm. They are also uniquely placed to involve large digital platforms, and Government departments, agencies and regulatory bodies, the intended beneficiaries of some of the research, through existing partnerships and relationships.

The Turing thinks that the core activities of the Centre would play to Turing's strengths, particularly the emphasis on Privacy Enhancing Technologies and the range of work it has on online harms (from hate speech to modern slavery and online exploitation, terrorism and extremism). It also has the capacity necessary for: connecting researchers, running calls for grants and fellowships, organising public engagement activities, workshops and conferences, and interfacing with policymakers, regulators, industry and the third sector.
The Turing is planning to enter an 'intention to submit' which must be done by 27th February. If Southampton colleagues would like to signal their interest in being involved, and coming to a workshop that the Turing will potentially convene in early March, please get in touch with them at the email address
online-harms at turing.ac.uk<mailto:online-harms at turing.ac.uk>.
I should be grateful if you would copy me, so that I can keep track of potential interest from Southampton.
Best wishes
Susan
