[Turing-Southampton] AI for the Future of Society PhD Studentship: Technology, Ethics and Societal Values

The Web Science Institute is offering a PhD studentship in AI for the Future of Society<https://www.southampton.ac.uk/wsi/aifs/index.page> in collaboration with Dstl and The Alan Turing Institute.

The studentship is open to applicants eligible for Home (UK/EU) fees who are available to start by March 2021.



The deadline for applications is 31 December.



Project outline:
A PhD project, based at the University of Southampton, will draw on both computational sciences and social sciences in order to understand AI and its application as a socio-technical system to explore the legal, technical, economic and social conditions necessary to ensure that data and AI are consistent with social values.  The outcomes will have scientific impact by generating new knowledge at the cutting edge of AI and Ethics, by increasing public engagement and understanding of the use of data and AI, and by identifying potential changes in work practice and policy within the defence sector and wider society.
