3D-Printed Metal Bridge: Call for Research Champion and ideas for research projects
The Turing's data-centric engineering programme is now seeking out a Research Champion and ideas from researchers for projects to utilise the data that will be collected from the world's first 3D-printed steel bridge.
The smart bridge, a 12 m long metal 3D printed stainless steel bridge, will be installed over a canal in the centre of Amsterdam early 2020. A sensor network has been installed on the bridge to monitor structural behaviour over time. More details about the project can be found here<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.turing.ac.uk%2Fresearch%2Fimpact-stories%2Fbridging-gap-between-physical-and-digital&data=01%7C01%7C%7Cea0325fd897443c3088a08d752f3dbb8%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C0&sdata=tNwlSxzXyhcEe9OpcVyezBhfUIwVN4ZqbL9J%2FeqaC0Q%3D&reserved=0>.
The bridge has the following sensors installed:
* Load cells
* Accelerometers
* Inclinometers
* Strain gauges
* Temperature sensors
* Cameras
The data collected could be used for the following purposes, amongst others:
* Digital twin design and operation
* Sensor fusion
* Structural health monitoring
* Event detection
* Computer vision projects
* Detection of short- and long-term trends
We welcome ideas for projects to utilise the dataset and expressions of interest for the Research Champion role. The champion will lead on the development of an impactful portfolio of research projects in this area. There is an opportunity for further funding to support this.
If you are interested to get involved, please send a short description of your research interests related to the dataset, and indicate if you would like to be considered for the Research Champion role, to rbabb at turing.ac.uk<mailto:rbabb at turing.ac.uk> by 31st October at the latest.
Many thanks,
Rebecca
