***apologies if you receive this more than once***

Deadline approaching: 5pm Friday 11 October

The Web Science Institute<https://www.southampton.ac.uk/wsi/index.page?> has been granted an £80,000 Research Collaboration Stimulus Fund for 2019-20.
The focus of the Fund is on facilitating research collaborations that engage with non-academic partners. The Fund aims to stimulate and pump-prime interdisciplinary research activity across Faculties that will ultimately lead to collaborations and the development of full research grant or contracts proposals with non-academic partners. Projects arising will be externally-funded either directly, or the collaboration with the non-academic partner(s) will be leveraged through public funding sources, either national or international.
Successful projects will be awarded funding normally within the range of £5k to £15k.
The research projects should fulfil the following criteria:

  * Involve collaboration between disciplines, and applications that are cross-Faculty will be strongly favoured
  * Facilitate research collaborations and engagement with non-academic partners
  * Lead to the development of full research grant or contracts proposals with non-academic partners
  * Knowledge of and commitment to Web Science, Data Science and/or AI for Future Society
  * Applications are particularly encouraged in one or more of the following themes:
     * Security and AI (risk, trust, governance)
     * Making Smart Fair (inclusion, diversity)
     *   AI and Social Transformation
     *   Data for Public Good

Applications may be made from staff in any Faculty at the University of Southampton and should be submitted electronically in PDF format to Susan Davies sdd1 at soton.ac.uk<mailto:sdd1 at ecs.soton.ac.uk> by 5pm on Friday 11 October 2019.

An awards panel comprising the Web Science Institute Directors will rank proposals and make final funding decisions within two weeks of the closing date. Funding will be available from 1 November 2019. All expenditure must be completed by 31 July 2020.

Please see the attached application form, which includes guidelines on submitting proposals and conditions of funding.

If you have a project idea that you would like to discuss with the WSI before submitting, please let me know.

Best wishes

Susan
