***APOLOGIES IF YOU RECEIVE THIS MORE THAN ONE***

Please see below details of two Seminars, which may be of interest to some of you.

Applied Mathematics Seminar - Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence
Tuesday, 5 March 2019 at 11:00 in the Ketley room (54/4001)

Mahesan Niranjan (Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton)

Inference from Outliers

Classic machine learning is largely about classification and regression problems. However, many practical problems of interest in genomics, condition monitoring, medical diagnostics and security are better posed as problems of detecting novelty. In this talk, I will describe two applications of extracting useful information from novel data, in problems relating to modelling cellular protein concentrations and the solubility of synthetic chemical molecules. The algorithmic framework poses a robust support vector regression problem and the resulting non-convex optimisation problem is solved using a difference-of-convex formulation. I will further consider structured matrix approximation methods in the formulation of outlier detection and show how a robust version of principal component analysis, with sparsity constraints and a graph regulariser can be used in extracting outlier data, and illustrate the approach using functional genomics datasets.

Ethics and AI Seminar

Wednesday 13 March 6-8pm - Nuffield building 6/1077 - Lecture Theatre C
part of Southampton Science and Engineering Festival 2019 http://www.sotsef.co.uk/festival_events/<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sotsef.co.uk%2Ffestival_events%2F&data=01%7C01%7C%7C1523102552eb4dc5c29908d69e305ac8%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C1&sdata=V7uYk8yS98CT7yIZ6gB5tFvs0mGliwNzsSgXaAXuLk4%3D&reserved=0>

with Dr. Enrico Gerding, Professor Christian Enemark and Daniel First from Quantum Black

Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) increasingly affect our lives, from job selection where computer programs are used to automatically sift through applications, to our ability to get loans, credit cards, visas, and the premiums we pay for insurance policies. While such technology can make decisions more efficiently, are more consistent and less prone to subjective human decision-making, there are many challenges to be addressed around the fairness, transparency, as well as the legality of what are often seen as 'black boxes'.

This is an interesting seminar which looks at the philosophical and social arguments for and against the use of A.I., using case studies of the military and deployment of UAVs (drones), and examples taken from everyday life, as well as the views of a cutting-edge industry practitioner who uses data science and machine learning for commercial applications, will offer some insights on how to ensure machine learning models do not introduce bias or discrimination.

This event is free, but please register first: https://ethicsandai.eventbrite.com<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fethicsandai.eventbrite.com&data=01%7C01%7C%7C1523102552eb4dc5c29908d69e305ac8%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C1&sdata=CbQT7JTJJa32S4XsHpn8thBvZQIa6Fwnb9xf2ANWio4%3D&reserved=0>

Please note there is also a complimentary drinks reception immediately beforehand in Rm 6/1083 (Lecture Theatre C) from 4.30-6.00pm for delegates to meet the different speakers, network, and share views on the future development of software and technology.

Best wishes

Susan
