Dear All
Please see the email below from Anastasia Shteyn. Programme Manager at The Alan Turing Institute:
I am currently coordinating a response to the consultation on Smart Data, and Putting Consumers in Control of Their Data<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gov.uk%2Fgovernment%2Fconsultations%2Fsmart-data-putting-consumers-in-control-of-their-data-and-enabling-innovation&data=01%7C01%7C%7C8344d9beaff542862dd508d706afe9e7%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C0&sdata=Bd9yZ1lOBk12VBtycHG1nYk4p0rftujMUOXXI3dQR4s%3D&reserved=0> on behalf of the Finance and Economics programme at the Turing. The consultation, launched by Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), and Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), is part of the Smart Data Review to consider how the government can accelerate the development and use of new data-driven technologies and services to improve consumer outcomes.
We would like to include the views of as many researchers as possible from the Turing community.
The public consultation is guided by 15 questions outlined by BEIS, available at the back of the attached whitepaper (pp. 32-33). It requests feedback on:
1. Enabling data driven innovation in consumer markets
2. Using data and technology to help vulnerable consumers
3. Protecting consumers and their data
The paper also contains discussions and recommendations which are relevant to Turing research areas but are not specifically addressed in the consultation questions. We encourage feedback on these, including:
* Learnings from the world of Open Banking / Open Finance
* Architecture and deployment of smart data services
* Social and ethical impact of smart data, e.g in terms of trust, accountability and transparency
We welcome any contributions to the Turing's response (up to 300 words for each of the 18 questions outlined in the consultation). Submissions should be written in an accessible manner with a clearly defined contribution. Any references to relevant projects or work currently underway at the Turing are particularly welcomed. As a previous example of a coordinated consultation response from the Institute, please read the Turing response<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.turing.ac.uk%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2F2018-09%2Fresponse_of_the_alan_turing_institute_to_dcms_cdei_consultation.pdf&data=01%7C01%7C%7C8344d9beaff542862dd508d706afe9e7%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C0&sdata=hd28MgywNCSXTZ7QDlWjqOCGqQoOoCkKn2XHJDx7lIw%3D&reserved=0> to the formation of the Centre of Data Ethics & Innovation.
Please send submissions by EOD Tuesday 23 July to myself (ashteyn at turing.ac.uk<mailto:ashteyn at turing.ac.uk>). If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Kind regards,
Anastasia Shteyn
