Decision Support for Military Commanders Workshop
Overview: The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) are holding a one-day workshop on "Next Autonomy Challenge: Decision Support for Military Commanders" at The Alan Turing Institute. The workshop aims to better understand the range of AI techniques that can be used in the two challenge areas below, and provide ideas for follow on projects:
* Augmenting the Commander. The development of highly capable AI systems is required to augment the Commander. The commander role requires "intuition, experience and vision" in order to "translate strategic intent into tactical activity". This is a Dstl priority area.
* Augmenting Staff Roles. A range of AI systems are needed to augment the Commander's staff, in roles which typically "draw on more rational and logical processes and tools".
Who should attend: Dstl want to engage with academics from a wide range of backgrounds, specifically those developing emerging AI techniques, novel uses, or less well-known techniques that could drive AI-enabled decision making. Academics are particularly encouraged to attend if they are working on (but not limited to):
* AI techniques that can deal with large volumes of unstructured, incomplete and potentially untrustworthy data, to recommend options or decisions regarding what action to take.
* AI techniques that can automate creative and largely intuitive human decision-making processes, with few "rules" to guide decisions, and multiple competing objectives in a complex information environment.
* AI techniques in gaming, human computer interaction, agent-based simulation, reinforcement learning, and decision support.
The above areas of expertise are meant as guidance and suggestions for new ways to approach the challenge are welcome. Academics that have not traditionally worked in the Defence sector are encouraged to apply to promote diversity of ideas. Dstl strongly believe that Defence can learn from AI developments in other sectors.
How to apply: Turing Fellows and Academics working in Turing partner universities are eligible to apply. To express interest in attending and to ask any questions please contact the Defence and Security Programme Manager, Rebecca Babb, rbabb at turing.ac.uk<mailto:rbabb at turing.ac.uk>. Expressions of interest must be submitted by Tuesday 5th March. Please include a summary of why your experience is relevant to the challenge area (150 words max). The workshop will be held in May (date tbc). Academics will be provided with an honorarium to cover travel expenses, participation on the day, and completing a short post-workshop survey that will feed into a final report.
Many thanks,
Rebecca.
