Dear all,

On Thursday (11 October) at 2pm in 54 / 7035 (7B), we have an S3RI
seminar from Chigozie Edson Utazi (University of Southampton) on
"Mapping vaccination coverage to assess progress towards disease
elimination in low and middle income countries". Details are given below.

The seminar will also be available via a live web-cast at
https://coursecast.soton.ac.uk/Panopto/Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=3e410131-050f-42b4-aa9e-7b0f22df4d63

The talk will be followed by tea and cake in the staff reading room on
level 4 of building 54.

All are welcome!

Best wishes,

Helen

Mapping vaccination coverage to assess progress towards disease
elimination in low and middle income countries

Chigozie Edson Utazi, University of Southampton

Vaccination coverage is an important indicator used in assessing the
performance of immunization programs. However, coverage levels and
numbers covered are typically measured through national statistics or at
the scale of large regions. These mask epidemiologically-important
heterogeneities and coldspots of low coverage that may allow diseases to
persist, even if overall coverage is high. Hence, to decrease inequities
and accelerate progress towards disease elimination goals, fine-scale
variation in coverage should be better characterized.

In this talk, I will discuss Bayesian geostatistical methods and data
sets used in producing high-resolution maps of the coverage of measles
and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) vaccinations for varying age
groups of children under five years in some priority countries. I will
also present a novel disaggregation approach for mapping vaccination
coverage using areal unit based data in settings where point-referenced
data are inaccessible.
