I agree with the views on email not having the qualities of a social machine in terms of purpose, output, etc.
In specific contexts however, maybe there are some social machine elements to it - e.g. email services like gmail.

A part of the discussion on social machines is still ongoing I understand but I think that there is some consensus on the fact that some of them are infrastructure or services while others have a specific purpose.
