the Pew Internet and American Life Project (www.pewinternet.org) is a
non-profit organisation that conducts surveys and studies of internet use
and its impact on American life.

it's "a nonprofit “fact tank” that provides information on the issues,
attitudes, and trends shaping America and the world. The Pew Internet
Project explores the impact of the internet on children, families,
communities, the work place, schools, health care and civic/political life."

Anyway they just today released a new study about public perceptions of
facebook use, which shows a few interesting facts including

2/3rds of US adult citizens are on facebook (!)
61% have taken a break from using fb for at least 2 wks
more people want to spend less time on fb in the next year, although
28% report that they perceive FB as less important now than a year ago, as
opposed to 12% that sy the opposite
Slight gender discrepancy between women and men, with women reporting
wanting to spend more time and finding fb more useful, respectively

Anyway here is the full report - again, just based on a survey but
definitely useful for looking at public perception of one of the kings of
social machines --
