Where Thunderbird is a bit iffy is the old mail search, which I've
had issues with similar to the ones described earlier in Mail.app.

Haven't seen that myself. But you might want to set the storage
choices carefully. Here's what I use:
Also, it does this very special thing where automatic updates
disable most of your plugins. Almost all of the plugins I used to
use couldn't keep up with the frequency of the updates and get
disabled. There's no warning before you accept the update, and no
undo option.

Number 1, see this option in Preferences:
Number 2, there's an extension for that :-)
Talks IMAP+SMTP to the world, and has lots of add-ons available.

The only thing it doesn't do well is automatically handle
calendar invitations with iCloud calendars. I *believe* that bit
works with Exchange calendars, but I don't personally use them.
It does display all calendar invitations very nicely though, so
you know exactly what to put in your calendar.

I have multiple accounts, multiple identities in each account,
multiple (ever-changing) signatures in each account/identity,
and at least 30 "favourite" folders at any time, where I only
want to see the favourites but be able to get to others fairly
easily.

Assuming you've already done Step 1, give Step 2 a go as
well. That's helped me in the past (when I used Mail.app).

Since updating to Sierra, search in mail has been really
poor:

Looking for mail I KNOW is there (in fact I’m looking
right at it) - I search for a person’s name - and the mail
from that person isn’t coming in.

I’ve done “rebuild” on the mailbox to no avail.

Suggestions??

'Every morning when I wake,
Dear Lord, a little prayer I make,
O please do keep Thy lovely eye
On all poor creatures born to die
And every evening at sun-down
I ask a blessing on the town,
For whether we last the night or no
I'm sure is always touch-and-go.
We are not wholly bad or good
Who live our lives under Milk Wood,
And Thou, I know, wilt be the first
To see our best side, not our worst.
O let us see another day!
Bless us all this night, I pray,
And to the sun we all will bow
And say, good-bye - but just for now!'
