But last night was a doozy. It was running very hot - it had a 3d game & firefox open and both seemed to be causing more load than usual. It had already had one sulk about freezing programmes due to a lack of resources, and then I had some display corruption -- based around windows not scanlines, so I'm guessing drivers not hardware. Soon after that it suddenly threw up the pick-a-user screen I logged back in and tried to start firefox but it wouldn't as it was already running. Creepiest of all, I heard the facebook new-message sound effect as someone messaged me. Firefox was still running but I had no way to get back to it. I killed it from the command line and then could start firefox and then I tried to return to what I had been doing, but two more incidents of throwing me back to the "pick a user" screen and I gave up and did a hard reset.

I've also had issues around the WIFI being a big flaky, and this was fixed by resetting the NVRAM.

The crashses, by the way, are full lock ups with the mouse still moving, not the oldschool darkend screen and message in the middle.

--
Christopher Gutteridge -- http://users.ecs.soton.ac.uk/cjg

University of Southampton Open Data Service: http://data.southampton.ac.uk/
You should read our Web & Data Innovation blog: http://blogs.ecs.soton.ac.uk/webteam/
