Hi Jules,

I just tried to fetch this via https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/support/distribution/private/, but the link to apple from there results in a 403 permission denied. Should this work, or do I need to VPN in?

2 things for you this morning folks, for *brave* people only!

1. Apple released the first Developer Preview of Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) yesterday afternoon. It's on the software service at
cifs://software.ecs.soton.ac.uk/software/images/apple/Mountain Lion
Like Lion, just copy the installer app into your Applications folder and run it.
Do *NOT* run this on your main Macs yet, I don't yet know how stable or functional it is.

2. Apple also released the first beta of their new "Messages" app for Lion/Snow Leopard.
This gives you the ability to send and receive iMessages to and from people's iPhones and iPads.
Dead cool! :-)
Currently, to get a message to someone's iPhone, you must use their Apple ID email address or another email address they have listed as an alternative address. If you send it to their phone number, only the iPhone will receive it and not their Mac or iPad. Apple know all about this problem and are working on a solution.
This beta app will expire when Mountain Lion is released.
It does appear to work okay!
Get it from:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/mountain-lion/messages-beta/

Have fun y'all!
