the buttons have the word "CUI" written all over them, and
              no applications will work.

However, you can upgrade to Lion 10.7.3 perfectly safely
by downloading and installing the "Combo Update" package

*If* you have already broken your system, here's briefly
how to get out of the mess:
1. Find another Mac (laptops are easier for this)
2. Download the Combo update from the link above on to the
              working Mac.
3. Boot the broken Mac into Target Disk Mode (hold down T
while you switch it on, and keep it pressed until the big
grey Firewire icon appears on the screen).
4. Connect the 2 Macs together with a Firewire cable.
5. The broken Mac's hard disk will appear as a disk
(orange icon) on the working Mac.
6. Run the Combo update on the working Mac, but remember
to "Change install location" to the disk that is the
              broken Mac.
7. Sit back and wait a few minutes.
8. When it's all finished, Eject the broken Mac from the
working Mac, unplug the Firewire cable and power-cycle the
              broken Mac.

You should now have 2 working Macs!
