Yeah, that would help on the disconnection problem (although actually ssh will survive for quiet a long time if you don't touch it.)
But that is only part of the problem.

Somehow it sort of sticks in my craw to go via the University for personal stuff.
In fact, that is one of the main reasons I run my own VPN server - for things like iPlayer from abroad.
