You should recalibrate the battery meter first.

It's a pretty straightforward process, described here:
http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/20/mac-101-battery-not-charging-recalibration-may-be-the-answer/

And reset the SMC once you've done that.

That *may* make the battery indicator more accurate.

Also, look in your System Profile (there's a button in About this Mac) 
and see what it says about the state of your battery.

The battery may need replacing. Talk to Rob Penn, as we can get 
replacement batteries if it's out of warranty (3 years).
