You are running 15.17(.1?) ? The first release of 15.17 was a right mess 
(toolbar buttons without icons, all sorts of rubbish), but mine 
certainly seems okay now I've got the fix for that one installed.

You can double-check by manually installing the update from here:
     https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3127248

You can check if the fonts are okay in the "Font Book" app. Also 
Microsoft recommend (inevitably) a reboot ('cause that fixes all 
Microsoft-related problems, right?).
