[OSX-Users] suggestions to address 10.10.5: slow file opening/saving

hi All

have any of you found OS X 10.10 to be slow - spinning beach ball - on attaching images to a document?

i just can’t lock it down - my guess is it’s some plug in that’s doing this but not sure


of late on 10.10 this is what happens: in an app - mail, the web, twitter, anything
i’ll use the function in the app to add an attachment/image
that opens a given directory
go to select the object and 
get the beachball on selection

then hit save 
get the beachball there, too

some have suggested it’s a cloud kit thing but 
a) i don’t use that and
b) i’ve tried it and doesn’t work

Any thoughts much appreciated
this is 10.10.5 - latest.

just about ready to do a clean install (NOOOOO) as a work around

ps - safe boot seems to stop the issue - but it’s hard to tell as a lot of the even simple programs like Preview don’t seem to run in safe mode so hard to check.
