I recently decided to buy a couple hundred GB on iCloud for my photos (2.99/month).
Even though there are other places I could have put them.
It gives me an off-site backup, as well as managing to put degraded versions of the photos on my macbook air, iPad and iPhone; but then I have just got myself a desktop machine.
But the saw thing would work for you - if you don’t tell it to keep full quality on your machine, then it will upload the full version and then keep smaller versions on your new machine.
Might be enough to work for you.

I have my main iTunes setup (where I sync devices) on a Mac mini at home (with the iTunes folder on a NAS array), and use iTunes Match (£26 per year or something similar) so I can have what music I actually want to listen to on my MacBook, without having to store everything. Just pull it from the cloud as needed.
