I recently decided to buy a couple hundred GB on iCloud for my photos (2.99/month).
Even though there are other places I could have put them.
It gives me an off-site backup, as well as managing to put degraded versions of the photos on my macbook air, iPad and iPhone; but then I have just got myself a desktop machine.
But the saw thing would work for you - if you don’t tell it to keep full quality on your machine, then it will upload the full version and then keep smaller versions on your new machine.
Might be enough to work for you.
