I suspect Chris is correct. I think the latest version of Office was working fine on 10.10

I don't use MS Office much (only Outlook - and under duress) so haven't really observed this first-hand, but I did see a statement from MS recently about it that said "we continue to work with Apple on a fix" - implying that there's something wrong in OS X as much as in Office. Might need 10.11.1 to really get it back off the ground again.

I’ve been getting significant crashes and start-up hangs (requiring forced quits) since going to El Capitan.

Seems it’s a common problem. I’d advise against the combination of Office 2016 for mac and OS X 10.11 until this is fixed. It’s very annoying.
