I have this problem too.
Partcularly with my laptop when it sleeps when its running MS office apps – wakes up again with all apps crashed.
Annoying, but I have not lost anything yet.

Subject: [OSX-Users] Office 2016 - avoid on El Capitan (or don't upgrade)

I’ve been getting significant crashes and start-up hangs (requiring forced quits) since going to El Capitan.

Seems it’s a common problem. I’d advise against the combination of Office 2016 for mac and OS X 10.11 until this is fixed. It’s very annoying.
