Where are you based?
And what does "traceroute mactardis.ecs.soton.ac.uk" produce as output?
150GB in, say, 13 hours = roughly 27 - 30 Mbits/sec.
Sounds on the slow side.
Please don't omit any top-level directories once you have a complete
backup. It's a *lot* quicker to recover from a complete backup. So *do*
include all your Applications and such like.
