Please try it again now.

Check your SMTP server is set to smtp.ecs.soton.ac.uk with "Use SSL" 
ticked, "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" ticked (in 
the "Edit SMTP Server List", not the IMAP properties of the account), 
either port 25 or 587 should work fine.

I've got outgoing mail now working on Thunderbird, Apple Mail 10.10.4 
and El Capitan Beta 3.

Please let me know how you get on.
