Literally thirty seconds after posting this hour-long ponder, I finally 
look at reveal.js to realize that the demo has two-dimensional slide 
navigation: http://lab.hakim.se/reveal-js/#/2

So there you are, a presentation where you can drill-down into a topic, 
time or audience interest permitting. All it needs now is to break free 
of the linear progression entirely, so rather than go back up, you can 
continue the diversion smoothly into the next top-level slide. :D
