I can't comment for the 13" Retina, but my experience of the 15" model is that the scaled modes are absolutely fine. I prefer the 'optimal' resolution of 1440x900 because that's about the best balance for screen real estate vs. pixel size for me, but I've never noticed any reduction in quality when using the other scaled modes.
