I've been using shift+cmd+4 for years, which appears to to trigger the same code.

shift+cmd+4 gives the crosshairs, pressing space switches to window mode - I never use fullscreen capture, so I don't know what the shortcut is for that.

It saves files to your desktop, named after the date and time.
