I usually just use cmd-shift-4 (⌘⇧4) then select part of screen you want. Is there a benefit to using an application to do this?

Hold down control key before you finish and it will go straight to the clipboard, rather than desktop. Esc to cancel.

For whole screen: cmd-shift-3 - that really has been there forever.
