It loopback mounts just fine under OS X for cherry-picking individual 
files (or Linux, if needed). I did test this first. ;)

Might be of interest to the list; this is how you can loopback-mount an 
image of something with a partition table under OS X:

It'll actually give you block device nodes for each partition within the 
image. Be careful of Disk Utility getting confused as always (bless). On 
the plus side, it beats calculating offsets for mount under Linux...
