[OSX-Users] exchange mail settings that work on iPhone but not Apple mail??

so, 

why might an email account set up work on an iphone/ipad and not on Apple Mail?

I have a colleague here who asked by the way could you as a CS geek help me get my email going on my computer?

here's the conundrum:

he can access this account set  up as an Exchange account on his phone and ipad no probs;
as soon as he tries to set it up the server says that the "server is not responding it may be temporarily unavailable."

now, one might think that this is a vpn issue, but since his iphone and ipad have no problem connecting via a straight "exchange" email set up, that this *should* work, too. and there's no vpn from his research institute.

any thoughts??
