Hugh,
likewise - at home for moving files around - or at work - it's great to have the usb/ethernet adaptor.
steve - i have the adaptor on a usb port on the back of the dvi display for jacking in there. It also means that guests who use the display in my office can get wired internet without having to register a hardware mac address see the ethernet id is on the dongle (guess how long it took me to figure out that was why my air wasn't "working" on the network - hadn't realized i'd swapped dongles with an unregistered one)
likewise keep the usb adaptor in the travel kit.
now might just get the TB dongle for the more data intense scenarios on the gbit hub just to see how much time it saves.
here's a tangential ethernet story:
was on the MIT network awhile ago with a macbook pro, had it plugged into the ethernet - it wasn't working. plugged into a 100baseT router and it was fine. The wall was gigabit, the mac was actually broken for handling that speed; needed the hub to get the slower speed; trip to the apple store for a board replacement. Would not have found that out without access to that speed of line. Kinda funky.
