And if you want to switch it on/off permanently, click on that icon and
scroll the resulting list down to show the on/off switch at the very top.
In System Preferences / Keyboard / Keyboard Shortcuts / Mission Control,
you can assign a keyboard shortcut to show the notification centre (I
assign it to Cmd+Alt+Left arrow, which gives you a neat 3-in-a-row of
keys to press to show and hide it on a laptop). Then hold down the keys
to show it, lift off the keys to hide it again.
