So long as you have the box
Open "safe" files after downloading
*UN*ticked in your Safari Preferences, and you don't open anything
downloaded by your web browser that you didn't ask for, I personally
don't see much point.
Act sensibly, get software from reliable sources, and you will probably
be okay.
I've never run any AV software on a Mac, and I've never had any trouble.
My (personal) 2p worth.
