no problem

yes, it is more secure and is now supported on the majority of devices.

we have ecs-wlan as a holdover to allow people to slowly switch and as a way of support those few devices which don't support 802.11x authentication.

> it's backup since eduroam depends on iss??

no, eduroam does not depend on iss, ecs has it's own infrastructure for eduroam and you can use your ecs account to authenticate if ISS suffer an outage. If ISS do suffer an outage however you will not be able to authenticate with ecs from off campus as the peering goes that way.

ECS-WLAN is still needed for non academic guest accounts and at some point in the future a new soton-guest (or similar) SSID will appear which will act as a cross campus guest system, discussions are on going as to what type of authentication system this network should use and how people register accounts on it.

So we have both for now, this years undergrad intake cannot use ECS-WLAN themselves but for everyone else we recommend transitioning to eduroam. The system will have been running 3 months at xmas, so I would hope a big push will happen to encourage people to switch in the new year.

Hope this answers some questions.
