[OSX-Users] usb ethernet dongle - only getting self-assigned ip?

i'm not sure what's changed but with the macbook air 11, the usb ethernet dongle at work is now only getting a self-assigned ip.

there are various notes about this dealing with home lan's https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2676062?start=0&tstart=0
that involve airports, and home routers
but nothing for a work environ.

any thoughts/experiences welcome

(as you know some systems can only be reached via ethernet in ecs)
