You can get OEM Win7 quite legally for ~£75, and pay-for Windows updates 
are less frequent, though. (Especially since they made it so tempting to 
skip Vista entirely! ;) )

Microsoft make you pay for Samba, Postfix, Mailman, MySQL, Tomcat and 
Apache? :)

My question is why you need a server box (in the "group policies and 
software RAID" sense) of anything for a PVR/home fileserver...?
