The upgrader really does work. I've tested it several times on some very 
well used and thoroughly tweaked machines, and it got it all right, and 
told me of any software I had that wouldn't work (including Visor which 
quite impressed me).

Or else do what I'm about to do to the machine I'm typing this on:
Back up everything to Time Machine
Wipe disk and re-partition
Install Lion from USB stick
In the installer, migrate settings and accounts (but not apps or "other 
files and folders") from the Time Machine backup
Re-install all my apps from scratch

Seems a good compromise to me between not wanting to spend days doing it 
and having a chance to thoroughly clean up my Mac.
