So, are you saying that: unless the App is in the store, you can't get it on your machine? 

Or instead: Will I be able to download a DMG from any place I like? And drop the App in the /Applications folder?

And: Surely I will be able to build something myself (say with XCode or gcc & make) and install it in /usr/local ?

(There is for instance an annoying issue with iPad and open source applications not allowed in the App 
Store. Makes you want to jailbreak only to defy this)
