Well, I suspect most users are happy with that trade-off to get 2GB of free virtual memory stick. The broad support for DropBox in so many apps makes it the defacto Cloud file store for so many people [1]. Of course, putting say ECS exam grids on it might be convenient for exam board, but...

That people don't read T&C texts is another issue.

JISC has, or recently had, a call out for £300k to develop 'DropBox for UK HEIs'... presumably driven by concerns over the privacy and rights over data.  If funded, that could provide a solution before long.

As for encryption, you can always encrypt your own data before storing it Out There.
