Maybe I just trust people/companies too much, but I fail to see what 
useful information they could glean from my calendar - it's barely any 
use to me.

Glad you're not saying that's the point being made, since to 
characterise my comments as "if you aren't doing anything wrong you have 
nothing to hide" is totally misunderstanding them.

Of course everyone has a right to private, off-the-grid interactions, 
but there's a very good way of doing that /and/ having a nice big synced 
calendar... scribble the secret stuff on a bit of paper, or write it in 
a local text file, or something like that. Somehow, I've managed it so far.

In which case, maybe rolling your own sync solution is a good idea, but 
doing it with an iPod and two computers isn't going to work, 
unfortunately. If I were trying to do it myself, I'd suggest having your 
computers automatically SSH to each other and exchange calendars, but 
I'm not sure of the technicalities of that.
