I know this doesn't help you, mc, as you are on imap, but for others:
For those who don't know, both iCal and Address Book now sync quite happily with Exchange.
So I run them and Mail and Outlook (and Sunbird, etc when I feel like it) on the mac, and all the syncing happens to my iPhone and iPad on all mail accounts and calendars etc..
So it sort of Just Works.
Good job, as I am too tight to fork out for .Mac :-)
