 In the name of Science, I have applied FV2 to my new Air. Can't assess the impact fully as yet, but most write-ups claim the CPU hit is virtually zero. Certainly no current obvious CPU hit. I/O is negligible anyway, since the SSD is so speedyfast. 

Going from unencrypted to FV2 does not require the extra space on the SSD, and is utterly painless. The machine reboots, you log back in and can still use the Mac whilst it encrypts itself. Small thing to note is that the login screen will thereafter come up before OS X loads, since you need to authenticate to unlock the disk. 

There's the option to make a recovery secret in case you forget your password, and you can choose to store it with Apple, protected by three personal questions, should you so wish. 

Something of note - your Time Machine backups do not appear to be encrypted. So take the laptop with you and leave the backup disk at home somewhere safe.
